Walk with us through the canyon
Tour Overview
Stakkholtsgjá is a large canyon within the Þórsmörk & Goðaland Nature Reserve - 2 km long and surrounded with cliffs of up to 100 meters high. To get there you will have to drive up the famous F249 4x4 Trail and cross many rivers on the way. We start the tour at the mouth of the canyon, which gradually becomes deeper and narrower. At the end of the canyon, after crossing a river by foot, you will reach a hidden waterfall.
A visit to Stakkholtsgjá canyon is a great way to get to know the area of Þórsmörk and experience the beauty of Icelandic nature. Þórsmörk is an area surrounded by three glaciers, one of which is the well-known Eyjafjallajökull glacier that erupted in 2010.
The tour starts from Reykjavík and continues with the scenic drive along the South Coast. You´ll visit the picturesque Seljalandsfoss waterfall, and turn to the 4x4 road that crosses multiple glacier rivers and enter the volcanic landscape of Þórsmörk. You’ll stop in Húsadalur where it is possible to have lunch and drinks and explore the area a little bit before the bus continues to the canyon of Stakkholtsgjá. The experienced guide will lead you through the canyon and make sure that you are safe. After the hike, you return to Húsadalur, and you can either spend the night in the rustic mountain huts, or return to Reykjavík.
